Although the majority of children at read Academy speak English as their first language there may be instances where this is not the case. Where English is not the child’s first spoken language extra support is given in order to access learning in lessons and in improving their English literacy skills. EAL pupils will be highlighted for extra support from class teachers and a one page profile will be created which will help identify the child’s language weaknesses and addresses them with teaching strategies, specific resources and intervention sessions that will help facilitate the progression of the child.

Other strategies which can also help will be addressed to encourage thinking, speaking and listening. Parents may also be asked to assist with specific recommendations made by the classroom teacher and the SENCO.
