Read Academy is a Muslim faith independent school whose curriculum is designed to secure strong academic outcomes, excellent character development and deep Islamic understanding, enabling students to succeed in education and live purposeful and principled lives in modern Britain.
Our secondary curriculum is structured to be knowledge-rich, literacy-driven, carefully sequenced and highly supportive, ensuring students rapidly gain the knowledge, skills, and learning behaviours required for success at GCSE and beyond.
Across KS3 and KS4, our curriculum is built on four core principles:
1. Literacy as the gateway to learning – explicit teaching of reading, vocabulary, writing, and oracy across all subjects
2. Secure knowledge foundations – carefully sequenced subject content that builds schema and addresses gaps in prior learning
3. Strong character and learning behaviours – routines, resilience, independence and self-regulation
4. Islamic education and moral development – nurturing students who embody Islamic values in their conduct, learning and contribution to society.
KS3 Intent – Building the Foundations
At Key Stage 3, the curriculum focuses on:
• Establishing pupils as confident and successful learners
• Building essential subject knowledge that underpins GCSE study
• Developing reading fluency, comprehension and academic vocabulary
• Embedding routines, focus and positive attitudes to learning
Islamic Education at KS3 plays a central role in shaping student's identity, character, and moral understanding. Students develop knowledge of Qur’aan, Hadith, Seerah, and Islamic manners, learning how these principles guide behaviour, respect and responsibility in school and wider society.
By the end of KS3, students are academically and personally ready to access KS4 qualifications with confidence.
KS4 Intent – Securing Outcomes and Future Pathways
At Key Stage 4, the curriculum becomes sharply focused on:
• Securing GCSE subjects as gateways to opportunity
• Providing carefully selected qualifications that maximise success
• Sustaining improvements in reading, writing and numeracy
• Developing independence, resilience and employability skills
• Preparing pupils for clear post-16 pathways
Islamic Education at KS4 deepens student's understanding of faith in action. Students explore how Islamic principles relate to citizenship, ethics, responsibility and life in modern Britain, preparing them to be thoughtful, respectful and contributing members of society.
